- Next, we'll jolt the journey with a look into the battery that powers this electric beast.
- Finally, we'll rev up your knowledge about the EV5's rivals and its market positioning
Kia EV5's Design Elements - a Concept Car's Twin?
The concept version of the Kia EV5 left us all with charging hearts, and we can't help but notice the striking similarities between the concept and what has been leaked in the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) filing. The analogy isn't far-fetched - the EV5 indeed borrows heavily from its conceptual predecessor, retaining much of the unique design features such as traditional wing mirrors, flush-fitting door handles, slightly redesigned headlights, and tail lights. We're set for a seamless transition from concept to production, folks!
But the only thing constant about the EV5 is the change - the production model is not a mere carbon copy of the concept. The most notable departure is the presence of a redesigned charging port, much larger than the one on the concept model. Also, watch out for the slightly tweaked bumpers, modified to accommodate those swanky number plates!
Adding the 'S' in SUV: EV5's size
Hold on to your hats as we manoeuvre through EV5's dimensions. One look and you'd agree the EV5 is a smaller-sized sibling of the India-bound EV9. Measuring 4,615mm in length, 1,875mm in width, 1,715mm in height, with a robust wheelbase of 2,750mm, EV5 seems like a petite powerhouse next to the larger EV9 that measures 5,010mm in length, 1,979mm in width and 1,780mm in height with a wheelbase of 3,100mm. Don't let the subtle downsizing fool you. Though smaller, the wheels stay faithful to the same design as the ones on the EV5 concept. Compact but substantial, that's EV5 for you!
Power-packed Performance
Built on the rock-solid E-GMP platform, Kia EV5 electrifies with a single electric motor that pumps out a whopping 218hp and 310Nm of torque. Gear up for an exhilarating ride as EV5's top speed is an electronically limited 185kph. The question on everyone's lips: will there be more? It is rumoured that the future might witness a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive version. Keep it tuned here with us at MotoMall - we promise to keep you charged and informed!
The Torque of the Town: EV5's Battery
EV5's source of electricity, its battery, is set to be a gamechanger. Adding a twist in EV5's tale are MIIT filings pointing towards the Chinese-spec EV5 being powered by a BYD's lithium-ion phosphate (LFB) Blade battery. A slightly more ambiguous global model might get an 82kWh NMC (nickel manganese cobalt) battery that can run up to 600km. Now, that's what you call, a long-range electric SUV!
In the Shadow of Giants: Kia EV5's Rivals
With Volkswagen ID.4, Toyota bZ4X, and Nissan Ariya already holding the fort, Kia EV5 will face stiff competition within the SUV electric vehicle segment. While all these models currently remain outside Indian gates, the Volkswagen ID.4 is expected to launch in India soon. As the race for electric vehicle domination picks up, will Kia manage to outpace the competition with its new compact SUV? Only time will tell.
The EV5 is the brainchild of a joint venture in China between Kia and Yueda and will take baby steps in its home market before conquering other global circles. But where does this leave India, you ask?
India Awaits the Green Signal
As the EV6 already zooms across Indian roads, marking Kia's first tryst with the Indian electric vehicle market, all eyes turn expectantly at the EV5's prospects in India. While there are no official announcements in sight, the arrival of EV9 next year makes us wonder if EV5 will follow suit and capitalize on the growing electric vehicle wave in India.
With the Kia EV6 making major strides, can we expect the EV5 replacing the conventional Kia SUVs and Kia compact cars on Indian roads? Again, Kia remains tight-lipped as we eagerly anticipate their next move.
