Honda Dominates Scooter Market with Activa in Q1 FY2025

The two-wheeler industry has witnessed significant growth in the first quarter of FY2025, particularly in the scooter segment. With sales totaling 1.66 million units, scooters made up 33% of the total two-wheeler sales of 4.98 million units during April-June 2024. Motorcycles led the sales with 3.19 million units, showcasing a 17% year-on-year growth, while mopeds represented 2.46% of the total, recording 1,22,715 units sold.

Market Leaders and Performance

At the forefront of this scooter market revival is Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI), which has solidified its position as the leader. In Q1 FY2025, Honda shipped a remarkable 7,94,835 units, marking a 35% increase compared to the same period last year. This growth reflects the rising demand for both 110cc and 125cc variants of the Honda Activa. As a result, HMSI has expanded its market share to 48%, up from 45% in the previous year. However, it’s important to note that this performance still lags behind the 1.11 million units sold in Q1 FY2019, highlighting the evolving market dynamics.

Following closely is TVS Motor Company, which retained its second position in the scooter sector. In the same quarter, it delivered 3,86,633 units, achieving a 21% year-on-year increase, with a notable contribution from its popular models, the Jupiter and NTorq. Despite this growth, TVS's market share slipped slightly to 23%.

Other Competitors Making Their Mark

Suzuki Motorcycle India reported impressive growth in Q1 FY2025 with 2,46,264 units sold, translating to a 30% rise and an increase in market share to 14.79%. The company’s success can be attributed to the demand for its popular Access 125 scooter, which exemplifies Suzuki's stronghold in the 125cc category.

Hero MotoCorp, despite being in the fourth position, managed a modest growth of 1% with 85,389 units sold, combining ICE scooters and its electric model, Vida V1. The latter saw a staggering 203% increase in sales, helping offset declines in traditional scooters.

India Yamaha Motor, holding fifth place, sold 75,607 units, showcasing a 32% increase, while Bajaj Auto jumped to sixth place with sales of 40,854 Chetak scooters, boasting a remarkable 96% improvement over last year.

Future Outlook

As the scooter market continues to expand, questions remain about how demand will evolve in the future. Upcoming proposals in the Union Budget 2024, aimed at boosting rural income and enhancing personal earnings, are expected to further stimulate demand across the two-wheeler segment. The continued popularity of models like the Honda Activa, along with competitive offerings from other manufacturers, will play a crucial role in shaping the trajectory of the scooter and overall two-wheeler industry in India.
